Myth Mondays on CTV Morning Live! Is eating after 7 okay?! Find out.

September 15, 2014 by Rachel

Myth Debunking on a Monday at CTV!

1.
Never eat after 7pm.
a. Myth.
If you have dinner every night at 6 pm, please do not eat past 7 pm. However, if you work a weird schedule or exercise late in the evening, it’s important to eat something so you are not going to bed starving. Easy to digest foods- such as high protein soups or smoothies are best for late night meals.

2. It is best to eat 6 small meals a day/eat every 3 hours
a. Myth.
If you have blood sugar issues, eating frequently is important. However, it is often best to stick with 3 main meals if you can. Most snack foods are not great (especially high sugar and calorie bars), and often when snacking, people can overeat. Eat healthy snacks such as veggies and hummus.

3. Drinking ice water helps your body burn calories

a. Fact!
An 8-ounce glass of ice water will burn around 9 calories…not enough to lose a significant amount of weight. During meals it is best to have room temperature water since ice water can hinder digestion, so only consume cold drinks in between meals.

4. It’s ok to eat the egg yolks
a. Fact!
Unfortunately, eggs have been vilified for their cholesterol content, however, they are full of nutrients! Egg yolks contain 13 essential nutrients including vitamins D and E. They are also a great source of choline which is great for the brain, and lecithin which helps your body digest fats. I

5. A low-fat diet is best for weight loss
a. Myth
Low fat foods (especially packaged products) are usually high in sugar which causes your body to store fat and increases your appetite. Having some fat in your diet will help keep you full and satisfied and supply the fat soluble nutrients- A, D, E, and K. Healthy fat like avocados and walnuts (portion controlled too) are great choices. Note- if having bacon, please limit serving size to 2-3 strips and choose nitrate free, preferably from a local farm.

We would also like the thank the local restaurant, Cafe 1274 for lending us their silver food covers! Thanks so much!

If you are looking for a recipe of snack that is great, we have hummus recipe below!

Basic hummus recipe

• 2 x 400g cans of chickpeas ( Save the liquid inside)
• 4 tsp tahini
• 2 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 tsp crushed sea salt
• 6 tbsp quality extra virgin olive oil (plus some extra for drizzling)
• 3½ tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
• Pinch Paprika, cayenne (optional)
• Coriander or parsley leaves (optional)

Tip chickpeas into a bowl and save the liquid. Rinse the chickpeas in cold water and pour into the food processor. Add the tahini, crushed garlic, salt, lemon juice and seven tablespoons of the leftover liquid from cans. Turn on the food processor and pour in oil slowly as it blends.
When the mixture is fully combined and smooth, put it into a serving dish. Drizzle with some more extra virgin olive oil if desired. Sprinkle with paprika, cayenne and finely chopped coriander or parsley leaves, if desired.
