Airline foods! What you can bring and what you cannot, on CTV MORNING LIVE.

July 11, 2016 by Rachel

What to bring on a plane to eat (that you are actually allowed to!)

It’s summer and we are all going places! Here are some handy and easy snacking tips of foods you can bring with you when flying. These are based around Air Canada but it is good to check to see if other world destinations will let you bring canned goods. Some countries allow it with a permit that you pay for. Check out the CATSA website as well.

You can get easily dehydrated so ensure you bring your water bottle that can be filled. Once you pass security fill it up! Before you board the place, past security, you can often buy seeds, and fresh fruits at many of the locations for food stuffs.

Before you fly

To help with Immunity:

1. Take Zinc and Vitamin C and B complex vitamin (Foods to eat peppers for C, pumpkin seeds zinc, eggs Bs and asparagus Bs)
2. Avoid being over caffeinated and try to eat water rich foods (cucumbers, leafy green, get a Green Juice or an Immune Supercharge from Urban Juice Press!
3. Avoid sugary or greasy meals, although fast will leave you feeling uncomfortable and wired. Flying on a plane can be uncomfortable enough so try to help your tummy out.

TIP
To do before you fly weeks in advance: Pre-order meal that works with any food sensitivities you might have, gluten free, dairy free, many of these options are available but planning ahead is best. They may not have a specialty meal on hand for you.

What to pack and how:

Ensure you put everything in a clear bag or container, this way you can put it into the larger clear bag to be cleared when going through security. Use the 100 ml Rule when going through security for LIQUIDS AND GELS

1. Fruit: Grapes, cut up apples, avocados, oranges (squeeze lemon juice onto the avocado)

2. Dried Fruit but check for added sugar for the healthiest option, dates, prunes etc

3. Seeds and your made at home trail mix: walnuts, Krisda chips, pumpkin seeds and natural dried apricots, roasted chickpeas
* TRY TO AVOID NUTS for allergies seeds give you different nutrient profile.

4. Pre cut celery and carrots, cucumber in a container with hummus or a tzaziki no more than 100 ml (a 1/3 of a cup is 79 ml)
* All must be under 100 mL

5. Protein bars (Genuine Health)

6. Crackers like Mary’s crackers or air popped popcorn in a baggie as well

7. EMPTY WATER BOTTLE, fill it up AFTER customs

8. Coconut chips and coconut yogurt (100 ml portion for the yogurt)

9. Cheese Babybel, comes in its own package!

10. Home made muffins you can bring
adapted from www.flavourandsavour.com

Grain-free Goodness/Lemon Blueberry Muffins

INGREDIENTS

6 eggs
½ cup coconut oil
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
¼ cup local honey
zest and juice of 1 lemon * Use an orgainc lemon for the zest!!!
½ cup coconut flour or almond flour if not allergic
½ teaspoon sea salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
¼ teaspoon baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 cup fresh or thawed blueberries

INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350F.
Whisk the eggs, oil, vanilla, honey, lemon juice and lemon zest together in a large bowl.
Sift the coconut flour, sea salt, and baking soda and powder, then add this to the wet ingredients and stir until fully combined. Coconut flours works a bit differently so really stirring helps. Then slowly put in your blueberries last and stir.
Using parchment paper liners is a great idea so they don’t stick! 🙂

After:
After the flight: water rich foods, no alcohol until you have drank water, save some snacks for when you arrive at your new destination because sometimes that customs line is LONG! Melatonin like Sleep Plus and Immucore to help with immunity!

Sipping on a Tea from Traditional Medicinals helps to calm you and get you to bed.
